An intensive, professional level program, the Child & Youth Care Worker program offers students skills-oriented training to equip them to help children and adolescents and their families in coping with personal and daily living challenges.
Many young people are burdened with neglect, abuse, emotional distress, family dysfunction and failure in many areas of their lives. These burdens are result in social, emotional or behavioural problems surfacing in the family, the classroom and the community. The trained youth worker strives to work with the youth and their families by means of a supportive relationship to overcome these difficulties and obtain a more satisfying level of functioning and personal competence.
Duration
This is a one year qualification and can also be offered as skills programmes, modules or short courses.
Access To The Qualification
No person with a record of child abuse; history of violent crimes; or substance abuse record should be considered for this qualification.
Purpose
This qualification will be useful for:
Auxiliary child and youth care workers.
Persons who work in related fields such as social workers, pastoral counselors, where knowledge and skill of child and youth care work is an advantage.
Entry Requirements
Learners with a full matric pass with the following:
- Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 4.
- Communication at NQF Level 4 in a First South African Language.
- Communication at NQF Level 3 in a Second South African Language.
- Learners without matric will complete the bridging course consisting of the fundamentals.
Recipients of This Qualification Will Be Able To
- Perform clearly defined tasks and activities which contribute to the holistic care and development of the young person.
- Develop themselves purposefully, professionally and as a resources for child and youth care work.
- Demonstrate knowledge of and work in ways that are consistent with the ethics of the field and workplace.
- Demonstrate understanding of online and consultative supervision and their role in the provision of care and own personal development.
- Describe and uphold the rights of young people and promote these in their practice.
- Work under the supervision of an appointed supervisor and as a member of a team.

- Module 3: Support and caring skills
- Module 4: Professional and personal competence
- Module 5: Developmental and therapeutic work
